Phantom 101 - A Beginner's Guide
Q. How much do they cost?
A. (NOTE: All prices quoted include installation. Prices are subject to change without notice.) Phantom Door Screens w/ insect screen mesh are almost always $399.00. A standard inswing door with wood exterior trim is $399.00. This sounds like a narrow definition, but it is actually the majority of cases. Anything else is (usually) $439.00. That includes doors taller than 8', metal clad doors, and sliders.
Serene Window Screens run from $185.00 to $314.00 depending on volume, size and mesh type. Average for insect screen on a window is $195.00.
Executive Powered Screens are priced by width, height and mesh type. Call us with the dimensions of the area you'd like to screen and we'll be happy to give you an estimate.
Q. How do retractable screens work?
A. Retractable screens are actually simple devices. Unlike traditional screens, which are fixed on all sides to a rigid frame and are always in use, retractable screens appear and disappear "on demand". The screen mesh recoils onto a round tube (the "roller") inside a protective cover (the "housing"). The recoil power is provided by an internal spring, electric motor, or gearbox, depending on which product is used.
Q. Where is Southern Screens located and how far do you go?
A. We are in Cordova, TN but our exclusive territory is quite large. In Tennessee, we handle everything west of the Tennessee River (including Memphis, Dyersburg, Jackson, Milan, Selmer, Somerville, Paris, Savannah, Pickwick Lake, & Counce). In Mississippi, we have from Meridian, Jackson and Vicksburg north to the Tennessee line (incl. Madison, Ridgeland, Canton, Grenada, Senatobia, Tupelo and Blue Springs, [Lakes Sardis, Enid, & Arkabutla], Greenville, Yazoo City, Olive Branch, Clarksdale, Como, Coldwater, and Southhaven). In Arkansas, we have just the eastern edge (Jonesboro, Paragould, Forrest City, Helen, Elena, etc.).
Q. Are there any disadvantages to retractable screens?
A. That depends on what you want the screens to do. Retractable door and window screens are not good at preventing animals or children from entering or leaving, and should never be installed for that purpose. Also, retractable screens always form a rectangle when in use and cannot be conformed to arched openings or triangular areas. That's about it, though.
Q. Where can I get Phantom Screens?
A. You can buy directly from us, from an authorized dealer, or from Lowe's Home Improvement stores nationwide (door screens only).
Q. What are the advantages of retractable screens?
A. Three things come readily to mind; convenience, versatility and aesthetic appeal. Retractable screens' nature (there when you need them, gone when you don't) make them perfect solutions for recurring part-time problems like insect control with natural ventilation, solar UV protection, room darkening and privacy needs. When the need is gone, so are the screens. Because each Phantom Screen is custom sized for its location, a wide variety of window, door, porch, patio, or almost any opening can be handled with elegance and style.
